Delirium Series
“The terrestrial order, the order of the earth, consists of things that take on a permanent form and provide a stable environment for dwelling. They are the 'things of the world', in Hannah Arendt's sense, things that stabilize human life. This terrestrial order is today being replaced by the digital order. The digital order de-reifies the world by informatizing it. Information, rather than things, determines our lifeworld. We no longer dwell on the earth and under the sky but on Google Earth and in the Cloud."
“ It is not possible to linger on information. It is relevant only fleetingly. It lives off its capacity to surprise. The fleetingness of information alone can account for the fact that information destabilizes life. It constantly attracts our attention.” “Meaning and coherence are founded on narration. The digital, that is, numerical, order is free of history and memory.” - Excerpt from Byung-Chul Han's "Non-things" 2022.
Delirium functions as an archaeological dig, where the canvas documents data, information, and frequencies. This process is cathartic, reclaiming ephemeral and destabilizing elements into something physical, tangible, and stable.
Here, layers accumulate, morphing into almost physical terrains. Through its material presence, similar to an algorithm, the creation and curation of the work were not controlled by me. Over a span of three months, I transmitted only three elements each day that had caught my attention. These ranged from bits of text and signage to Instagram infographics, or even mundane items like a coin in my pocket, the tail of an airplane, or a Red Bull on discount down the street. Through this process, I aimed to engage with the site in a manner that asserts a sense of 'being in the world.' Consequently, the canvas becomes a dual space of accumulation and erasure.
The title 'Delirium' reflects the disorientation often felt upon awakening from a coma, symbolizing how our sense of time has been altered and condensed since the pandemic.
